What is HAZWOPER Training?

HAZWOPER stands for Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response. It’s required for employees who may be exposed to hazardous substances during various operations.

OSHA created this standard to protect workers engaged in:

  • Hazardous waste site operations
  • Corrective actions and cleanup projects
  • Emergency response to hazardous substance releases
  • Storage, treatment, and disposal facility operations

Employers must provide this training before workers engage in hazardous operations (and refresher courses annually thereafter).

Frequently Asked Questions

Is HAZWOPER training the same as OSHA certification?

No, OSHA does not issue individual HAZWOPER certifications. A training provider can give employees a certificate or course completion record after they finish the required instruction.

Are the 24-hour and 40-hour HAZWOPER courses interchangeable?

No, the right course depends on what the employee does and how much contact they may have with hazardous substances. General site workers usually need the 40-hour course. Occasional site workers may qualify for the 24-hour course.

Does everyone at a company need HAZWOPER training?

No, HAZWOPER training is for employees who may be exposed to hazardous substances during covered work. Other employees may need different safety training based on their job duties.

What information do I need to provide before scheduling HAZWOPER training?

It helps to know what type of work your employees perform, their job duties, the worksite conditions, and the course they may need. Safety By Design can review this information and help your team choose the right training format and course length.

Can employees take HAZWOPER refresher training before the annual deadline?

Yes, employees can complete the 8-hour HAZWOPER refresher before their annual training date. Employers should keep records of the original course, refresher training, and any additional instruction employees receive.
